Easy Hair Ideas with Mellissa Brown

Whether you want to change your style for spring or you have a special night out coming up, check out Mellissa Brown’s expert advice on transforming the catwalk look into something you can achieve at home.

“Whichever style you choose, start off with a moisturising shampoo and conditioner so your hair looks healthier and easier to style. I tell my clients to use head&shoulders Hydrating Smooth and Silky shampoo and conditioner which leaves hair irresistibly soft.”

The bob
Whether you have a bob that touches the jaw or falls to the collar bone, recent celeb sightings of the bob reveal that the key is the fringe.
• To keep a bob looking its best, care for your hair with a moisturising shampoo and conditioner and use serum on the ends of your hair to keep it looking smooth and healthy, for hair that glows with health.
• Give your style more of a party look by adding an ’80s twist… If your hair is wet comb hair into a side parting. Next, add gel from the roots and comb your hair through so it is flat to your head. Sweep behind your ears for an 80’s retro look.

ROUGE TIP: If your hair is dry you can still create the same style but use a styling cream or wax as opposed to gel as this will stop your hair looking greasy.

Quiffs and backcombing
Adding plenty of volume to your hair paves the way for a very fashionable look, as favoured by Cheryl Cole, among others.
• Start by blow drying your hair to give it a smooth texture.
• Take a triangle section from the front of your hair line and then lightly back comb to add height.
• Smooth the surface of the section and then create the quiff by pinning with two hairgrips in a cross.
• Finish with hairspray.

ROUGE TIP: Pull the rest of your hair back into a ponytail for a sharp look or leave down for a softer look.

Hair bands
You might associate hair bands with schoolgirls, but they can be an easy way to add glamour to any style in a matter of minutes. Indeed, silk alice bands covered with jewels made an appearance with Dolce & Gabbana.
• Choose a really simple hair style.  Blow dry smooth, tong to create loose waves or pull back into a loose and simple bun or ponytail.
• Back comb hair at the crown slightly to give volume and add height to hair, creating a good shape.
• Finish the look by placing your hair band on, sweeping it from the hairline backwards.

The messy bun
The look here contrasts the front – hair swept back from the face, which looks neat – with a messy bun at the back, which is kept loose. This gives the look of stylishness without being too stiff and over styled. It can work really well as an easy option when you’re going out after work and want to a quick style change.
• Start by adding texture to your hair with some mousse.
• Pull hair into a ponytail and fasten.
• Wrap the hair around base of ponytail and fasten with grips.
• Finish with some serum to smooth the hair and hair spray to hold the style in place.

ROUGE TIP: For a different look create a low side parting and pull the hair into a side bun and add big earrings for a more glamorous style.
