The effect can be subtle or dramatic — so no matter which eye makeup color you choose, follow our step-by-step guide to create this season’s colorful smokey eye.
How to Get a Colourful Smokey Eye
“Most people associate the smoky eye with charcoals or deep browns,” says makeup artist Diana Carreiro. “But the new colorful smoky eye is about combining blues, greens, purples and coppers, and just having fun with it.”
Step-by-step

1. Choose The Right Eyeshadow Shades
On the spring runways, designers showcased the smokey eye in a full spectrum of colors. But to really make your eyes pop, go for smoky eyeshadow shades that are the opposite of your eye color on the color wheel, also known as complementary colors. “Using complementary colors offers stronger contrast than any other color scheme and draws maximum attention,” says Carreiro.Blue and grey eyes stand out with warm eyeshadow shades like bronze and copper. The reason? Blue and orange are complementary colors. Try:CoverGirl Smokey ShadowBlast - Bronze Fire. Green and hazel eyes look great in purples, plums and pinks, since green is opposite the red family of colors on the color wheel. Try:CoverGirl Smoky ShadowBlast - Purple Plume. Brown eyes pair beautifully with just about any makeup shade, including bright blues, purples and greens. That’s because brown is considered neutral. Try: CoverGirl Smoky ShadowBlast -Tempest Blue or Citrus Flaire. All eyes can pull off neutral colors like silver and charcoal eyeshadow shades, worn alone or as an accent to the colorful smoky eye. Try: CoverGirl Smoky ShadowBlast - Onyx Smoke or Silver Sky.

2. Apply Your Smokey Eyeshadow
“The idea of the smoky eye is that you have one shade fading into another for a soft, muted effect,” says Carreiro. To keep the look modern, don’t use more than two eye makeup shades on your lids. Can’t decide which ones? CoverGirl takes away the guesswork with Smokey ShadowBlast - Silver Sky. Because they’re cream shadows, not powders, they’re a breeze to use: you can apply them with your fingers, a brush or directly from the tube. Start by sweeping the darker of the two eyeshadow shades along your upper lash line and into the crease, and along the lower lash line. “When you’re putting that much color on the top [lids], you need to balance it out underneath,” says Carreiro. Smudge the edges with a brush or your fingers. Next, apply the lighter of the two smoky eye makeup shades starting from the crease of each lid, softly blending up to the brow bones, and then sweep it along the lower inner corners. Want extra definition? Line your upper and lower lash lines with a black or deep charcoal shade, blending it with a brush or your fingers. “With smoky eyes, you don’t want any sharp, skinny lines — it should always be fat and blended,” says Carreiro. Finish your smoky eye look by curling your lashes and applying two coats of black mascara. For a dramatic effect, choose a lengthening formula like CoverGirl LashBlast Length Water Resistant Mascara - Black. This water-resistant mascara creates extremely long lashes that won't flake or break. With an exclusive nylon formula and extended brush, it’s designed to give your lashes super length without flaking or clumping.

3. Balance It Out
With your eyes as the focus, keep the rest of your makeup neutral. “Go for a nude lip, some bronzer and maybe a bit of pink on the apples of your cheeks just to mimic your natural color,” says Carreiro. “Don’t wear anything too bright, like red — just keep it sheer and light.
