You can, of course, get a makeover on a whim as you’re walking past the cosmetics counters of a department store, but I think you’ll get a lot more out of the experience if you do a little planning in advance.
For starters, why not have your makeup done for a party this holiday season? Find a makeup artist whose style you like by watching him or her make up other women at your hair salon, eyebrow studio or behind the counter of a favorite cosmetic line. When you make an appointment, ask if you can bring in some of the cosmetics you regularly use. The makeup artist can let you know if the colors are right for you and incorporate a few staples into your party look.
If you’re having your makeup done at a cosmetics counter, decide beforehand which new products you’ll purchase -- say, foundation and blush -- and let the makeup artist know. Stick to the plan and your budget; you can always go back for that shadow or liner after trying it out for an evening. Finally, ask the makeup artist to fill out a face chart showing which products were applied where so you can recreate your dazzling new look on your own.

Once or twice a year, I like to have my makeup professionally done. It helps me refresh my look, brush up on application techniques, try out new colors and replenish my makeup bag. Though this sounds like a splurge, it’s actually a money-saver. When a pro recommends products that are the right match for my skin tone and type, I’m far less likely to buy a lipstick, an eye shadow, a foundation or a blush that I never end up using.
