Whether you put Suri Cruise (whose fashion sense and wardrobe are nearly legendary) or US pop sensation Miley Cyrus in that category, that's up to you. But, there is a feeling that some kids are just growing up (and dressing up) well and truly before their time.
Sure, everyone, young or old, should be able show their creativity in the way they dress, but there are just some kids who are dressing with way too much maturity and sexuality on their youthful sides.
Dr Emma Rush is a lecturer in ethics at Charles Sturt University and recently wrote a fascinating piece on the website of Getting Real: Challenging the sexualisation of children author and activist Meryl Tankard Reist. In her piece, Dr Rush says, point blank, that "A child is not a miniature adult. They are not a fashion accessory. They are a developing human being and need the cultural space to be just that. Yet we are now seeing constant marketing of adult appearance culture to children . . .''
Ironically, the lamb dressed as mutton scenario isn't all bad news. For women who are slightly older than teens. In fact, just a few years ago, the-princess-to-be, Kate Middleton, was heralded as a somewhat 'lamb-dressed-as-mutton' pioneer. In the nicest possible way. Journalist Polly Vernon observed in The Guardian, that Ms Middleton was "riding the vanguard of a brave new style moment, a style moment of such currency, significance and, well, good sense, that we will soon all be frenziedly attempting to integrate elements of it into our own signature looks. Middleton's look is a rhapsody of sensible skirts and tidy knits in various shades of beige, of little kitten heels and button down shirts, of Alice bands and silver sleeper stud earrings,'' said Ms Vernon. Ms Vernon went onto say that Ms Middleton had M.A.C. Or Middle Aged Chic.
"M.A.C., in its own, super prim, matchy matchy, demure and borderline prissy fashion, is wildly hot right now.''
Ms Vernon went on to say that these quite lovely 'lambs' (like Ms Middelton) who are choosing to dress as (chic) mutton are the "antithesis of the flashy, trashy, WAG-types; the absolute opposite of the slaggy Big Brother-esque approximation of glamour. M.A.C. has no time for skinny jeans or sloppy knits, for life-endangering platform soles or Glamour goth nail polish, for the whim and fancy of trends at all, in fact.
"Lamb as Mutton is nothing Kate Moss would ever bother with. And it's nice and comfy and always climate-appropriate. Accordingly, it feels like a breath of fresh, rosy-cheek-inducing, home counties air. Just like Middleton herself."
More irony is the fact that Katie Holmes (mother to the style-minded Suri) was also cited in the Guardian piece as a M.A.C. Sometimes, in fashion, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.
So, what do you think?
more photos needed….why have the whole space taken up by one photo of Miley? Where’s some examples of Suri, Katie & Kate? Appreciate you’re new but we’re pretty website savvy….website mags have to be very visual to keep people coming back.
